Flight from police results in charges

MARATHON, Ont. – A Monday morning flight from police on Highway 17 has resulted in charges for a 34-year-old woman.

According to an OPP release, police observed a black SUV on July 6 shortly after 10 a.m. travelling eastbound on Highway 17 at a high rate of speed.

Police say a traffic stop was initiated west of Terrace Bay, but the vehicle failed to stop, accelerated and continued eastbound on Highway 17.

The traffic stop was discontinued due to public safety.

Police later observed the vehicle speeding on Highway 17, west of Marathon. Police deployed a spike belt successfully and the vehicle pulled onto the shoulder of the highway a short distance later.

As a result of the investigation, police arrested and charged a 34-year-old with no fixed address with dangerous operation of a motor vehicle, flight from peace officer and race a motor vehicle – excessive speed.

The accused was brought to Marathon OPP and held for a video bail, later transferred to the Thunder Bay District Jail awaiting further court dates.
