THUNDER BAY – The Lakehead Region Conservation Authority has released a flood outlook statement ahead of the possibility of 50 additional millimetres of rain falling overnight.

The statement affects not only Thunder Bay, but surrounding communities, including the municipalities of Neebing, Oliver Paipoonge, Shuniah and the townships of O’Connor, Conmee, Gillies and Dorion.

“Water levels and flows are currently in a rise in area watercourse tonight and into tomorrow throughout the Lakehead Region,” the statement reads.

“The public is advised to exercise caution in and around area waterways. Ponding and localized flooding in low-lying areas is likely. Parents and caregivers are advised to keep children away from all waterways and discuss the hazards of flooding and fast-flowing water.”

The statement flood outlook was issued to give early notice of potential flooding. Authority staff will continue to monitor conditions.
