THUNDER BAY - With heavy rain falling over the last several days and more expected today, the Lakehead Region Conservation Authority has issued a flood watch for the city of Thunder Bay and surrounding areas.

Over the last several days, the region has received between 25 and 50 millimeters of rain. In the next 24 hours, an additional 20 to 40 millimeters is expected, with localized thunderstorms possibly producing between 50 and 75 millimeters.

The flood watch is in effect for the city of Thunder Bay, Municipalities of Neebing, Oliver Paipoonge, Shuniah, and the Townships of O’Connor, Conmee, Gillies, and Dorion.

Heavy rainfall can result in water pooling in low-lying areas and water levels along rivers and streams to rise rapidly. The public is advised to exercise caution near area waterways.

The flood watch will remain in effect until Tuesday at 12 p.m. unless updated earlier.
