THUNDER BAY – The Lakehead Region Conservation Authority has issued a flood watch for the Thunder Bay area, warning that rainfall forecast over the coming day combined with snow melt will increase flooding risk.
The Thunder Bay area is expected to receive 25 to 40 millimetres of rainfall between Friday evening and Sunday morning, according to Environment Canada, which has issued a rainfall warning for the region.
The LRCA warned 20 to 30 millimetres of that could come by Saturday afternoon, with the potential for thunderstorms to produce another five to 10 millimetres.
That could combine with melting snow and ice to create localized flooding, the LRCA said, with the agency reporting record mid-April snow measurements.
Precipitation may begin as snow, ice pellets or freezing rain before changing completely to rain Friday night, Environment Canada said.
