THUNDER BAY -- Area residents wanting to get early protection against influenza may now start making appointments.
The Thunder Bay District Health Unit reports that the vaccine for the flu strain expected to be most prevalent this season has now arrived in the city.
The vaccine can be administered by physicians and nurse practitioners by appointment. It will also be available at pharmacies and at flu immunization clinics to be set up by the Health Unit.
Spokesperson Judy Marton says eight clinics will be held in Thunder Bay starting Oct. 20 at the Boys and Girls Club at 270 Windsor St. Other clinics will roll out each Thursday in different locations through Dec. 8.
In the district, clinics are scheduled for Geraldton, Longlac, Terrace Bay, Schreiber, Manitouwadge, Marathon, Nipigon and Red Rock.
Marton is the acting manager of the Health Unit's Vaccine Preventable Disease Program.
She said the vaccine "stimulates your immune system to build up antibodies against the virus, making you stronger and ready to fight off the flu."
Influenza is an acute respiratory illness that can lead to pneumonia.
Marton said it's important to bring your Ontario health card if you choose to be immunized at a pharmacy.
More information about the vaccination program is available on the Health Unit's website.
