Even without rain, the Sunday afternoon sky featured a rainbow in the form of hundreds of brightly-coloured kites.

The visual display was part of the 36th annual Kite Festival at Chippewa Park. Veteran kite flyer Andrew Trevisan, 10, said he enjoys watching the different kites soar.

“It’s fun to control it, and it’s fun to see everybody celebrating this day,” Trevisan said.

The 10-year-old stood close by his younger cousin to make sure he was able to help her whenever possible.
“I like to help my cousin, she really enjoys flying kits too.”

The youngster’s favourite kites to fly are the classic and iconic triangle-shaped ones because he feels like they go a lot higher.

Nevaya Haneca, who also participated in the actives Sunday, had her kite soaring high above all the other kites.
The eight-year-old said there’s no real trick to keeping the kite in the air.

“I just let it all out, and then I let the wind catch it so the line is very straight and it’s not loose,” Haneca said.

City of Thunder Bay event supervisor Ash Young said the event is for everyone, even if you’ve never flown a kite.

“You can come down, you can learn how to fly a kite and you can talk to the pro demonstrators who are doing their demonstrations,” Young said.

Families have the opportunity to enjoy face painting, crafts, kite flying games and bouncy castles.

The event typically draws about 3,000 people to the park.
