Flying J project may be resurrected

The Flying J Truck Stop proposed for Oliver Road and the Thunder Bay Expressway may still have some wind beneath its wings.

The Flying J Truck Stop proposed for Oliver Road and the Thunder  Bay Expressway may still have some wind beneath its wings.

At a public meeting Tuesday looking at future possible land uses in the Golf Links/Junot corridor, city development services manager Mark Smith confirmed the $7-million project is not dead yet, despite an almost five-year delay in activity.

Smith, when asked about the project by a member of the public, said the company has indicated it may still have interest in he development and may indeed re-submit itsapplication to develop the property, which the American-headquartered firm still owns.

First approved by city council in 2004, the project has had its share of ups and downs in ensuing years. Nearby residents opposed the truck stop from the start, and took their appeal to the Ontario Municipal Board in 2007.

In December 2008 Flying J filed for bankruptcy in the U.S.
