Forest fire breaks out in Wabakimi Provincial Park

MNRF is keeping the fire under observation

DRYDEN, Ont. — Lightning has sparked a new forest fire within the boundaries of Wabakimi Provincial Park.

The Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry reports that the fire, discovered Monday afternoon, is north of Wabakimi Lake and about 70 kilometres northwest of Armstrong.

On Tuesday morning, a spokesperson at the MNRF fire centre at Dryden said the fire's size was estimated at 40 hectares.

The ministry currently has the fire under observation.

Three other new fires were spotted in the northwest region on Monday, including two near McCrea Lake, 150 kilometres northeast of Sioux Lookout.

They were estimated to be 100 hectares and 20 hectares in size as of Monday evening.

Out of 72 active fires in the northwest, seven  are not under control, six are being held, six are under control and 53 are being observed.
