PIKANGIKUM FIRST NATION – Nishnawbe Aski Nation Grand Chief Alvin Fiddler says the smoke from nearby forest fires is starting to take its toll on the people of Pikangikum First Nation.

Fiddler on Tuesday night tweeted out a picture from the community that showed a cloud of dark smoke nearly blotting out the sun.

“This smoke from nearby forest fire rolling into Pikangikum this afternoon,” he tweeted. “(It’s) causing concern for the elderly and those with respiratory issues. Evacuation may be necessary.”

Ontario’s forest fire map shows three active fires burning in the area, including a 28.1-hectare blaze listed as not being under control.
