THUNDER BAY – A pair of former Thunder Bay Border Cats are taking place in the Arizona Fall League this year.

Infielder Andy Weber, who played with the Cats in 2016 and 2017, is a member of the Mesa Solar Sox, and Matt Batten, who suited up in Thunder Bay in 2015, will play for the Peoria Javelinas.

Weber played AA ball for the Tennessee Smokies in 2021, hitting .223 with nine RBI in 139 at bats. Batten, 26, spent most of the summer with AAA El Paso, batting .300 with six homeruns, 39 RBI and 27 stolen bases in 117 appearances. He’s a 2017 draft pick of the San Diego Padres, taken in the 32nd round.

According to a Northwoods League release, 60 per cent of Arizona Fall League players go on to play in the major leagues.

A total of 21 former Northwoods League players have been named to AFL rosters this fall.
