A former Thunder Bay mayoral candidate has been arrested by the area's Organized Crime Unit following the discovery of a marijuana grow-op in Oliver-Paipoonge.

Doug MacKay, 57, is facing several charges including production of marijuana and possession for the purpose of trafficking. Officers found 323 pot plants growing on a property off West Arthur Street near the 25th Sideroad along with 16 kilograms of dried marijuana. Police say the street value of the drugs is about $630,000.

MacKay is a vocal marijuana advocate, and finished a distant third to Mayor Lynn Peterson in the 2006 election.
