FORT FRANCES, Ont. — A Justice of the Peace has fined a Fort Frances man a total of $2,400 in connection with a rubbish fire that got out of control.

Court was told that on May 10, 2017, Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry fire rangers were dispatched to suppress a forest fire burning in Halkirk Township, east of Fort Frances.

An investigation revealed that a resident had started a rubbish fire without having a permit for daytime burning, then left it unattended.

Under the Forest Fires Prevention Act, he was fined $800 for starting an unpermitted fire, $800 for failing to tend a fire, and an additional $800 to cover the cost of extinguishing it.
