Local psychics are reading their tarot cards to help the hearing impaired.

The third annual Lakehead Solstice Psychic takes place Friday and this weekend at the Landmark Inn. On the first day of the event psychics offered advice using tarot cards, tea leaf readings and crystals. A portion of the money raised throughout the event goes toward the Canadian Hearing Society.

Sherry Deamicis, 47, has worked as a psychic for 20 years. She calls her gift a combination of the supernatural and the spiritual. Deamicis said the five psychics wanted to help non-profit organizations and so they thought this was the best way to do so.

"I find the government does not give enough money to the non-profit organizations," Deamicis said. "The organizations have a hard time getting funding. So any money can send them off in a better direction and get more things for what they need."

Growing up Deamicis said she had strange experiences that she didn’t understand. It wasn’t until her grandmother and mother offered an explanation that she understood more about being psychic.

There are various methods to give a psychic reading. Psychometry is a method where a psychic holds an object and tells a little bit about the history of the object and the person it’s connected to. Deamicis said her business is doing well.

Many of the questions asked of Deamicis revolve around work. She said the most common question is whether or not the person would get their severance pay.

"I just read the cards and I see whatever comes," she said.

Johanna Jones, 58, has been going to psychics for 28 years. She said she went initially because she was curious and found it to be enlightening.

"When you go to a good reader they reflect what is in your own life," Jones said. "I’ve had really good readings. It makes you come back because you’re curious."

Sylvia Metnzer, 48, administration assistant with the Canadian Hearing Society, said she hopes to raise more than $1,000. Last year the fair raised $800.

Donations come from the $5 admissions and 10 per cent of the profits made by the psychics from readings.

"The psychics have been doing his event for years," Metnzer said. "I was fortunate enough to come here for a card reading at the Landmark a few years ago. I asked if they would do a fundraiser for the hearing society."

The money raised will go toward helping the hearing impaired who need new devices such as hearing aids, amplified telephones and smoke detectors.

Admission to the event is $5 and readings are an additional $30. The fair is open to the public between 11 a.m. and 9 p.m. Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
