Four file to run for council seats

There was no great rush to the city clerk’s office to file nomination papers for the upcoming municipal election.

There was no great rush to the city clerk’s office to file nomination papers for the upcoming municipal election.

Slightly more than a day after nominations opened, as of noon on Friday just four candidates have filed to run, none of them incumbents.
In McIntyre Ward, former radio newscaster Logan Ollivier was the first to hand in his papers, where he’ll likely face Coun. Trevor Giertuga on Oct. 27. Giertuga is the city’s longest-serving councillor, first elected in 2000.

In Northwood Ward, entrepreneur Shelby Ch’ng, owner of Unveiled Bridal Boutique, is looking to take over the seat held by Coun. Mark Bentz since 2003, while in Red River Ward David Noonan, president of the Thunder Bay-Superior North NDP riding association, will look to unseat Brian McKinnon. McKinnon, who was expected to file his own papers on Friday, was first elected in 2006.

Kimberly Coreau is the lone candidate so far in the at-large race.

Mayor Keith Hobbs said he plans to file his nomination papers later this month, seeking a second term as the city’s highest elected official.
