GUELPH, Ont. – Scoring four unanswered third-period goals has landed the Lakehead Thunderwolves into a tie atop the OUA West.
Kishaun Gervais scored twice and fellow rookie Josh Van Unen netted the game-winner for Lakehead, who trailed the host Guelph Gryphons 3-1 after 40 minutes, but pulled a 5-3 triumph, the streaking Thunderwolves nailing their sixth straight OUA win.
Spencer Blackwell, who tallied on a first-period power play to cut Guelph’s early 2-0 lead in half, and Greg Smith, who knotted the game 3-3 at 11:30 of the third, also scored for Lakehead.
Ted McGeen, Ethan Doyle and Nolan DeGurse replied for the last-place Gryphons.
Lakehead (12-5-2) and Windsor (12-3-2), who has two games in hand, each have 26 points, one more than Toronto Metropolitan (12-5-1), who were edged 2-1 by Laurier on Thursday night.
Smith finished with a goal and two assists for Lakehead. Goalie Max Wright stopped 20 of 23 shots to pick up the win, with Brendan Cregan good on 32 of 27 in a losing effort.
Lakehead will look to continue its winning ways on Friday night, when they travel to Waterloo to take on the Warriors, and Saturday, when they tangle with Wilfrid Laurier.
