With one day left to file, Thunder Bay’s city council race grew by four on Thursday.

Norm Sponchia makes it 19 in the at-large contest. He finished 15th in 2010.

Beatrice Metzler, who was ninth in the at-large race four years ago, this time around will seek to dethrone veteran councillor Joe Virdiramo in Westfort.

She’s the fourth person to toss her hat into the ring, joining Virdiramo, John Radl and Frank Scarcello.

Coun. Paul Pugh has another competitor in McKellar Ward, with Kristian Kuznak entering the contest. Doug Powell is the other candidate.

Police officer Jim Mauro, brother of MPP and former councillor Bill Mauro, is slated filed his nomination papers to run in Northwood. He would make it a three-person race alongside Shelby Ch'ng and incumbent Mark Bentz.

Meanwhile it's expected former two-time councillor Frank Pullia will take another shot at an at-large seat. He announced Thursday he will file papers on Friday to run for political office. A website linked to his personal website indicates he'll file at-large.

Nominations close Friday at 2 p.m.

As of 10 a.m. on Thursday there are 43 registered candidates for council and mayor and 25 running for the four school boards.
