KENORA, Ont. — Francis Kavanaugh will serve another four years as Grand Chief of the Grand Council Treaty # 3 First Nations.

He was elected to his third consecutive term in a traditional selection process Tuesday in Wauzhushk Onigum Nation, defeating his only challenger, Kathy Kishiqueb of Onigaming First Nation.

The traditional election is guided by Anishinaabe cultural protocols.

"This was the first year that each First Nation was given four votes. This process was used to acknowledge Anishinaabe traditional selection protocols independent from the Indian Act rules of procedure," said a news release from Grand Council Treaty # 3.

The treaty group covers 28 First Nations in northwestern Ontario.

Kavanaugh is from Naotkamegwanning First Nation.

"I look forward to working with all the chiefs and the people of Treaty # 3 serving another four years as Ogichidaa. We have a lot of work we've started and can now complete," Kavanaugh said.
