THUNDER BAY — The City of Thunder Bay is offering free compost for pickup by city residents at the Mapleward Road landfill site.

The compost is made up of leaf and yard waste picked up during the city's curbside collection programs, blended with organic waste.

Jason Sherband, the manager of solid waste and recycling services, said it is not suitable for vegetable gardens but is ideal for use in landscaping, in flower beds and on lawns.

The compost pick-up area can be accessed via John Street Road, east of the old entrance to the landfill site.

Hours of operation are Monday to Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The compost will be available while quantities last.

Residents are advised to bring a shovel and containers to carry the compost home.

The maximum amount permitted is one half-ton load per person.
