THUNDER BAY – Snow and freezing rain is expected to hit the region overnight, leading Environment Canada to issue a special weather statement for the city.

Environment Canada said the system is expected to move into Northwestern Ontario from Minnesota, and as temperatures drop to or just below the freezing point, patchy freezing rain could be an issue residents have to deal with Thursday night.

The weather service said freezing rain warnings could be issued later in the evening and motorists and pedestrians alike are urged to exercise caution in potentially slippery conditions.

The mixed precipitation is expected to depart to the east on Friday morning.
