FreshCo opens Thursday at former Thunder Bay Safeway location

The Court Street Safeway has been closed since May for rebranding.

THUNDER BAY — Northwestern Ontario's first FreshCo supermarket will open Thursday in Thunder Bay.

Parent company Empire – headquartered in Nova Scotia – has converted its former Safeway store on Court Street to the discount outlet.

Extensive renovations began last May.

The FreshCo store is owned and operated by local franchisee Brandon Farough, and has about 75 employees.

FreshCo has promised low prices and diverse offerings, including multicultural options.

It has said it will price match and provide rain checks with 10 per cent off through its in-stock guarantee.

Empire continues to operate two other Safeway locations in Thunder Bay through its wholly-owned subsidiary, Sobeys.

It plans to convert about a quarter of all Sobeys and Safeway locations to FreshCo by next year.
