THUNDER BAY – The Friends of the Library hosted a buck-a-bag book sale from May 29-31.

Located at the lower level of the Brodie Resource Library, readers were able to fill a bag of clearance books for $1 in total.

“This generates a lot of activity,” said Natalie Diakunchak, a volunteer for the Friends of the Library.

“People will get introduced to us because we’re hidden in this little corner.”

Friends of the Library held this event to raise funds for the Thunder Bay Public Library.

The Friends of the Library is a registered charity that was formed in 1987.

The organization is made up of volunteers dedicated to promoting and supporting the Thunder Bay Public Library.

“These events help to bring new people here, and everybody is quite happy to get good prices on books they want,” Diakunchak said.

The group runs a used book store in the lower level of the Brodie library, where this event was held.

They also deliver library books, every month, to those who cannot access the library.

The Friends have raised over $1 million since it was established.

The organization's contributions have been used to purchase countless books, eBooks and board games. They have also contributed to capital projects like the Mary JL Black Library.

“As everyone knows, the library is a very important facility. There are so many programs,” she said.

The Thunder Bay Public Library offers a variety of programs for kids, youth, adults and older adults.

“This benefits a wonderful cause for programming in the libraries,” said Peggy Derkacz, another volunteer for the Friends of the Library.

There will be another buck-a-bag event held from June 26-28.

The Friends accept cash donations as well as book, record and DVD donations.
