THUNDER BAY -- Hospice volunteers and residents alike will be lacing up this coming weekend for the Hike for Hospice Palliative Care.
Co-ordinated by the Canadian Hospice Palliative Care Association, the fundraising event takes place across Canada and is in its 12th year. The Hike for Hospice event in Thunder Bay is scheduled to take place at Boulevard Lake on Sunday, May 4.
Warm-up exercises get started at at 10:45 am, and the cutting of the ribbon that follows kicks off the three a five kilometre hikes around the lake. and 5 km Hikes around Boulevard Lake
When the hike is complete, participants will have a chance to meet in the gym of St. Ignatius High School where festivities will continue until 1 p.m.
Last year, the Hike raised more than $1.5 million for hospice palliative care in Canada. Organizers say that 100 per cent of the funds raised remain in the community they were gathered from. That means money raised by local participants will go directly to palliative care in Thunder Bay.
Paul Morralee, Chair of Hospice Northwest's Hike for Hospice Committee, says that crossing bridges is the theme for the 2014 hike.
“Bridges of awareness that will help educate, raise awareness and enhance the quality of end-of-life care for the people of our community,” he is quoted as saying in a news release.
“As we hike around scenic Boulevard Lake on May 4, our hikers will have an opportunity to pause for a moment of quiet reflection on the historic Black Bay Bridge and gently release a flower into the waters below in celebration of the lives of those we have lost.”
