THUNDER BAY -- The city's two-item-limit garbage debate isn't tied up just yet.
Coun. Larry Hebert has received a heaping response to changes in the municipal budget that reduced the number of curbside garbage a household can dispose of weekly from three items to two.
Friday is garbage day in Hebert's neighbourhood and most of the houses along his street only have two bags on the curb.
But he believes exceptions will have to be made.
"I've talked to a few people on the phone who have medical needs where they're going to put out more -- they already know -- more than two containers and we should have some kind of exemption for them," Hebert said. "So I'm going to ask what that system would look like."
Hebert will make a motion at city council on Monday to task administration with looking into a bag tag system that would accommodate households who need to exceed the two-item limit.
If passed, it would look into the feasibility, financial implications and process involved in selling and picking up tagged garbage bags.
"If you have some young kids and are using disposable diapers, they can add up pretty quickly. In the one case I talked to a lady who has a medical issue who has a lot of garbage because of that," Hebert said.
"We don't want to be punishing these people either but I think it's fair to go down. The lower we can reduce the stuff going to the landfill."
The two-item limit includes cans, which can fit multiple bags, provided the containers don't exceed a weight of 18 kilograms (40 lbs).
