Garden oasis pops up in Thunder Bay's landfill site (2 Photos)

Flowering plants and ornaments were placed around a pool of standing water

THUNDER BAY — Residents making drop-offs at the city's Mapleward Road landfill site were taken by surprise recently when they encountered what appeared to be the start of a carefully-planned water garden.

It was near the landfill's new compost laydown area.

Photos taken by some visitors last weekend show a variety of flowering plants, which they felt were arranged with a design in mind, within and around a pool of standing water.

There were also a number of small ornaments similar to what might be found in a water garden.

"It was neat to see that in the middle of a landfill," one of the visitors said.

But the city has no grand plan to make your trip to the dump an experience that's more aesthetically pleasing.

A spokesperson for Solid Waste and Recycling Services said some people had dropped off some plants at the landfill, and an attendant simply put them aside.

"There was no intent to make it a formal-looking garden," he said.
