THUNDER BAY – The price of gasoline in Thunder Bay has started to skyrocket in the past two days – and will climb even higher on New Year’s Day.

Several stations around town have boosted prices to $1.189 a litre for regular unleaded fuel, a pre-cursor to Sunday’s arrival of cap-and-trade hikes, which will add an additional 4.3 cents a litre at the pumps.

According to the website GasBuddy.com, just three Thunder Bay stations have kept prices below $1.10 a litre as of Friday night.

The cost of gasoline has also risen on nearby Fort William First Nation, where most stations are now charging $1.039 a litre.

The average price in Ontario is $1.084, according to GasBuddy.com.
