THUNDER BAY -- Mayor Keith Hobbs says ensuring the conversion of the city’s coal-fired generating station to natural gas is his No. 1 priority heading into the new year.

Hobbs on Wednesday took his commitment a step further, firing off a letter to Energy Minister Chris Bentley.

“In that letter we have a lot of top executives from mining companies talking about their concern and how it’s going to affect their operation and other manufacturing companies that want to come in to Thunder Bay,” said Hobbs.

“So we’re bringing in those people to assist us and we’re going to pull out all the stops. This plant needs to be converted and we need to get that done as soon as possible.”

Late last year Bentley announced the province was pausing the conversion as they looked at alternatives that might save the province up to $400 million.

Bentley is expected to journey to Thunder Bay on Jan. 14 to brief city officials on the status of the project.
