THUNDER BAY – With COVID-19 testing efforts lagging well behind provincial targets, Premier Doug Ford made a video address to Ontarians Sunday, urging residents to visit a COVID-19 assessment centre for testing.
The premier promised anyone concerned about exposure to the virus could get tested, regardless of whether they had developed symptoms.
“I’m here to ask for your help today,” Ford said. “I’m asking the people of Ontario: if you’re worried that you have COVID-19, or that you’ve been exposed to someone who has COVID-19 – even if you’re not showing symptoms – please, go get a test.”
“You will not be turned away, you don’t need an appointment. Just show up to a testing centre, and they will test you. No matter if you’re showing symptoms or you aren’t. And bring your family along with you to get tested.”
Testing numbers have consistently fallen behind the government’s daily goal of 16,000, often coming in below 10,000 per day over the past week. The premier warned increasing those rates was foundational to the province’s plans for a phased reopening.
“That’s the only way we can continue opening up,” he said.
Ford promised the release of a “detailed testing strategy” in the coming week, which would include plans to target regional hotspots and vulnerable sectors.
The premier did not take any questions following Sunday’s announcement.
