GINOOGAMING FIRST NATION – Ginoogaming First Nation has declared a state of emergency following the sixth confirmed case of COVID-19 in the community.

“We are seeing an exponential spread in our community going from 1 to 6 positive cases in a span of less than a week—we are close to exhausting internal human/other resources and are now needing outside government assistance to address the outbreak,” said Ginoogaming First Nation Coun. Sheri Taylor, in a release issued on Saturday night.

The community on Friday began stringent restrictions, limiting access to residents and essential workers.

On Sunday the measures will get even tougher, with access only allowed between 10 a.m. And 8 p.m., except for those who need to leave for work or in the event of an emergency.

The restrictions will be in place until further notice.

It's the first state of emergency declared in the community, located 40 kilometres east of Geraldton, since the pandemic began.

Council is looking to work with the municipality of Greenstone and hotels in the community to help those families who test positive and have no other option to self-isolate to do so.

“If our members are self-isolating and have had tests come back negative, they must continue to self-isolate/stay home and monitor symptoms for the 14 days since exposure.”
