THUNDER BAY – A young, self-taught knife-maker from Sioux Lookout suffered serious burns last week after a fire broke out in his workshop.

Brian Kaden, who started learning his trade at just 16, uses spare parts and scrap metals to make his knives, was burned to his arms and body and was transported to Toronto, where he is receiving treatment at Sunnybrook hospital.

A GoFundMe campaign has been set up to help cover the cost of damage to his shop and his tools. Kaden, earlier this year named the Young Innovator of the Year at the Northwestern Ontario Innovation Awards, will also need to use adapted technology to continue to his trade, as the severity of the burns means he will no longer be able to use many of his manual tools.

In less than a day, $4,400 of the $5,000 goal has been collected.
