Some local drivers were pleased when they went to the pump Sunday as gas prices in Thunder Bay dipped below the national average.

Gas prices across most of the city were around $1.19 per litre Sunday afternoon. That’s slightly lower than the $1.21 national average.

April Westover said she didn’t notice the drop until she passed by a full-service station on Red River Road. She usually goes to Fort William First Nation to fill up, where the city’s lowest gas price was reported at THP Variety & Gas Bar at $1.10 Sunday. Westover said she and her husband live in the country so when gas prices are high, they have to plan their trips into the city and drive less.

“I’m quite pleased and happy that there’s been a big drop because that saves everybody,” she said. ““I haven’t been at this gas station for about three months…so that’s already a change.”

Dee Fisher said she’s been following gas prices for a while and is happy with the drop. Although she’d like to see it go below a dollar a litre, any price drop is fine with her she said.

“As long as it keeps going down then good because everyone needs gas,” Fisher said.

Fisher said she thinks people in the city usually pay more than the rest of the country. On a recent cross-Canada trip, she said Thunder Bay’s prices seemed the highest.

“The farther we got away from Thunder Bay the cheaper it was.”

Gil Haglund works outside of the city so no matter what the cost at the pump is he has to pay it. He said he’s glad the prices are starting to drop.

“It’s almost where it should be I think we’re getting ripped off in this town for fuel,” Haglund said.
