Frank Iacobucci is heading into the Ring of Fire.
The retired Supreme Court Justice is taking on the role of lead negotiator for the province in its discussions with Matawa Tribal Council, represented by Bob Rae, over the Ring of Fire. Northern Development and Mines Minister Michael Gravelle said it’s a big step forward.
“We think that the appointment is a very good one,” Gravelle said. “He has a tremendous amount of experience and a very distinguished career.”
Iacobucci submitted a report to the province in February regarding First Nations representation on jury rolls.
Reporting to Gravelle, Iacobucci will work toward a negotiated framework between the province, First Nations and industry to try and tackle issues like environmental protection, infrastructure and revenue sharing.
But before that, Gravelle said Iacobucci wants to visit communities near the Ring of Fire to meet with chiefs, elders and other community members.
“We want to see this project more forward in the right way, in a smart sustainable collaborative way,” Gravelle said.
Gravelle couldn’t say when the formal negotiations might begin.
