Less grain shipments are coming into the Thunder Bay Port this summer
Port Authority CEO Time Heney says shipments were down about 30 per cent last month. Grain shipments are now down about 12 per cent for the year when compared to statistics from this time in 2012.
"I think we're entering a period of higher volatility than we've seen in the past," Heney said during an interview with CKPR Radio Thursday.
"The wheat board had a smoothing effect on shipments, which we no longer have, so we'll have to wait for the fall harvest to see exactly what happens."
Heney added that a late start to the growing season may also be a factor.
In total, there have been about 20 less ships this year when compared to 2012.
