Interior renovations at the 50-year-old arena will be done over the summer.

THUNDER BAY — The thousands of people who annually use the city's Grandview Arena can anticipate a fresh look to the half-century-old rink this fall.

Built in 1968, the Madeline Street facility is in line for approximately $120,000 worth of upgrading.

A summer lacrosse program that normally runs at Grandview is being relocated to Delaney Arena to make way for the renovations.

It's possible that a dog show scheduled for early September may also have to be moved to another city facility.

The city is still taking bids from interested contractors who were taken on a site inspection Tuesday.

Components of the renovations will include:

  • new skate flooring
  • some new lighting
  • new paint
  • patching
  • washroom improvements
  • new benches in the change rooms

"It's not, by far, the whole building, but it's some of the critical stuff" that's being fixed up, a city spokesperson told Tbnewswatch.

The spokesperson says hockey players will likely appreciate the new benches going into the change rooms, as they're aimed at providing more convenience.

The work is expected to be completed by mid-September.
