KENORA, Ont. – Grassy Narrows First Nation Chief Rudy Turtle will represent the NDP in the Kenora riding in the upcoming federal election.
NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh, who will be in Thunder Bay on Tuesday and Kenora on Wednesday, made the nomination official on Monday.
“He’s someone who has fought very hard for the people of Grassy Narrows, raised the concerns around the mercury poisoning, been a passionate voice, shown himself to be a true advocate and will be a great representative for all of Kenora,” Singh said in a video released on his official Twitter account.
Singh used to occasion to criticize Liberal Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, saying he’s all talk and no action.
“One of the biggest examples of that is the poisoning in Grassy Narrows and cleaning up that poisoning,” Singh said.
Turtle said he’s running for the seat, currently held by Liberal Bob Nault, because the Liberals have not delivered on their promises to his community.
“Things continue as they are and we want to make a positive change. In addition, the NDP have been a strong voice for our community … That’s something that I want to continue to do,” Turtle said.
Conservative Eric Melillo and the incumbent, Nault, are the only other confirmed candidates in the riding.
