THUNDER BAY -- Habitat for Humanity is calling on Thunder Bay to help with land donations.
Chief executive officer Randy Moore says the not-for-profit charitable organization only owns two properties and cannot plan any build beyond 2020.
The charity provides housing for low-income families, and are driven by volunteers who help build homes.
“There have been times in the past where the community is very active,” Moore said. “I think we just need to remind people we’re here.”
Habitat for Humanity hosted a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Tuesday in front of a newly acquired property on Leith Street.
The organization is hoping to build a duplex at the location in 2019, but will need some help if they want to take on any more projects.
“That’s something that the city of Thunder Bay can work with,” Coun. Rebecca Johnson said. “It certainly is an opportunity to have future taxpayers at a very reasonable rate.”
Habitat for Humanity has built homes for 39 families in Thunder Bay since 1994.
“I truly believe in this program,” Johnson said. “I look at the families we’ve helped over a number of years… I think it’s significant.”
