THUNDER BAY, ON, JUNE 20, 2016 - Habitat for Humanity has only 10 days left to raise $10,000 and reach its $50,000 goal by June 30.

Last month the organization announced a unique challenge offered by an anonymous donor through the Thunder Bay Community Foundation. If Habitat for Humanity Thunder Bay can raise $50,000 by June 30, the mystery donor will match it dollar for dollar turning that $50,000 into $100,000. To date Habitat for Humanity has raised $40,000.

As part of the donor campaign, for every $20 donated to HFHTB, the donor’s name will be entered into a draw for a queen mattress and box spring courtesy of Reid’s Countrywide Home Furnishings.

Reid’s is hosting the ReStore It: Up-Cycle Challenge until June 30 by selling 11 unique home furnishings transformed by local participants with items all from the Habitat For Humanity Thunder Bay ReStore, with all proceeds going toward the $50,000 goal. Intercity Shopping Centre will host a bottle and can drive Saturday, June 25 from 12 p.m. to 4 p.m. to help Habitat for Humanity toward the home stretch.

The money is desperately needed to build the Hrycyshyn family an accessible home for their 14-year-old son who, with severe Cerebral Palsy, requires 24-hour care.

Their current home is nearly impossible to navigate in a wheelchair. Rooms and hallways are too narrow, stairs mean he always needs to be carried to his bedroom and even bathing in the small bathroom is almost an insurmountable problem. He loves being with his family of six but with his wheelchair, the kitchen is too small for them to all sit at the dinner table together.

“That’s where a family bonds, all together around the dinner table,” Mom Taisha Hrycyshyn says.  “I just want my son to have a safe place with a great quality of life where we can be a family. Our main goal is to have our family together. Knowing that the community is rallying for us to accomplish that goal is beyond words.”

All donations to Habitat for Humanity Thunder Bay can be made online at www.habitattbay.com or by calling (807) 345-5520.
