Staff at a local salon wanted to do something to help those in need in Haiti. So they did what they do best — cut hair.

The Terra Nova Salon and Day Spa on Edward Street cut hair for donations for the Haiti relief effort on Sunday. All proceeds go to the Canadian Red Cross. The salon is normally closed on Sunday, but was open at 11 a.m. and continued to cut hair until 4 p.m.

Nadine Fenton and her daughter Dawn, 12, were at the salon to get their haircut for Haiti.

"It’s fantastic what they are doing," Fenton said. "Anything helps. There is only so much we can do…the money will surely go toward a good cause."

Steve Scaffeo, co-owner of Terra Nova Salon and Day Spa, said they have done more than 50 haircuts within an hour of opening and raised more than $1,500 by that point.

Scaffeo said the staff wanted to help those in Haiti after the earthquake hit last week. A majority of the staff volunteered their time to come in and cut hair.

"It’s sad what happened and we are just trying to raise as much as we can," Scaffeo said. "We’re doing as many haircuts as we can. We’re not drying the hair, we’re just cutting and it’s working out well."

There is no set goal for the salon. Staff was just trying to raise as much money as possible. Scaffeo had his own goal and wants to get 50 haircuts done before the end of the day.

Scaffeo said the customers coming in were donating whatever they could to the cause.

"People in Thunder Bay donate what they can. We’re having kids throw in loonies, quarters, or whatever they can to help," he said.
