THUNDER BAY – A Hammarskjold High School student has been awarded a scholarship worth $100,000 over four years.

Adam Luoma, a Grade 12 student at the north-side school, was named to the class of Loran Scholars, one of 36 high school students out of 5,194 applicants across Canada to earn the honour.

The scholarship includes a mentorship, funding for summer internships and a chance to participate in a network of past and present scholars.

“The entire Hammarskjold High School is incredibly proud of Adam for receiving this very prestigious scholarship,” said principal Derek DiBlasio in a release issued on Friday.

“This is an incredible accomplishment for a truly deserving student. Through his ongoing academic and co-curricular success, Adam makes our school a better place to be every day.”

Luoma is president of a student-led leadership organization that runs three annual conferences, co-president of the Hammarskjold student council and a member of the music committee.

Additionally he performs with both the school band and orchestra and plays on the volleyball and badminton teams.

If that’s not enough, he coaches the junior badminton and holds down a part-time job as a barista.

He intends to study neuroscience, with a focus on music cognition, when he hits university in the fall.
