THUNDER BAY — Thunder Bay Police have tallied the cost of their investigations into a series of threats made against Hammarskjold High School earlier this year.

Police Chief Sylvie Hauth, in a report prepared for the Thunder Bay Police Services Board, says the combined total of regular wages, benefits, overtime pay and vehicle operating expenses was $203,000.

Staffing costs included in the figure reflect the work of the TBPS intelligence unit, uniform patrol branch and criminal investigation branch as they worked to ensure the safety of the school population and track down the perpetrators of the mischief between February and April.

The report—to be presented at the board's meeting Tuesday—states its purpose is to provide "a perspective as to the magnitude of police resources that were utilized during the investigative process to bring this matter to charges."

Hauth said the costs do not include the expenses incurred by the OPP and RCMP in assisting TBPS.

On April 17, police arrested an 18-year-old woman and a 14-year-old boy on charges of public mischief and mischief endangering life.

They were apprehended after Hammarskjold High School was shut down on multiple occasions because of anonymous threats.

None of the charges against the pair have been proven in court.
