Former Ontario NDP leader MPP Howard Hampton (Kenora-Rainy River) says access to medical specialists for dozens of northern residents has been put at risk because of inefficiencies in the Northern Health Travel Grant system.
At Queen’s Park Tuesday, Hampton pointed to the case of Emo resident Christopher Pelletier. Because it takes 10 weeks before travel grant requests to even be considered, Pelletier no longer has the funds to keep needed medical appointments in Winnipeg and Thunder Bay.
Hampton says that’s a problem that has to be fixed.
In response, Health Minister Deb Matthews acknowledged there are flaws in the system. But she added that the government is trying to correct the problem.
