Handgun seized, officer assaulted at south-side hotel

Police say about 1,000 oxycodone pills seized after police responded to a call for an unwanted person who wouldn't leave the hotel when asked.

THUNDER BAY – An officer was allegedly assaulted, thousands of pills and a handgun was seized after police responded to a complaint of an unwanted person at a south-side hotel on Tuesday.

City police, in a release issued on Tuesday, said a 23-year-old Ottawa man faces a number of charges, after the suspect refused to leave the Victoria Inn when asked by police at about 2:40 a.m. and then allegedly assaulted one of the responding officers.

The suspect then arrested, but after a struggle, police managed to apprehend him, locating a handgun that was in the man’s possession.

Police say the seized pills are oxycodone. They also found about $1,000 in cash.

Philipe Martin McLaughlin of Ottawa was charged with a number of offences.

• Prohibited or Restricted Firearm: with ammunition
• Possession of a Schedule 1 Substance for the Purpose of Trafficking

Further charges are still under consideration.
