Health unit announces 12 cases, active numbers fall

Active cases in district fell to lowest level in over two weeks, despite 12 newly confirmed cases.

THUNDER BAY – The number of active COVID-19 cases in the Thunder Bay District fell to 118 Friday, its lowest level in over two weeks.

The Thunder Bay District Health Unit announced 12 new cases Friday morning, while another 28 were declared resolved.

Five of the new cases were a result of close contact with a previously identified cases, three were associated with an outbreak at the district jail, and two with travel outside the region. One cases had no known exposure category, while another was listed as pending.

Ten of the cases are in the Thunder Bay area, while two are in district communities.

There were no new COVID-related hospitalizations or deaths among district individuals, the health unit reported. Two people remain in hospital with the virus.

Meanwhile, there were no longer any active cases associated with an outbreak at Southbridge Roseview long-term care Friday. The company stated on its website it expects the outbreak to be declared over shortly.

The outbreak claimed the lives of 23 residents at the home since first being declared Nov. 17.

The district had seen a total of 1,029 cases Friday, with 884 resolved, 118, active, and 27 total deaths.
