THUNDER BAY – The Thunder Bay District Health Unit announced 26 new confirmed cases of COVID-19 Saturday, continuing a spike that has seen over 100 cases reported in just three days.
Of the newest cases, 18 involved individuals in the Thunder Bay area, 5 in district First Nations, and 3 in district communities.
Eight of the cases were associated with an outbreak at the Thunder Bay Correctional Centre, and another was associated with a separate outbreak at the Thunder Bay District Jail.
Another 14 new cases were considered a result of close contact with a previously identified case. Two others had no known exposure, while one was pending.
The number of active cases in the district stood at 160 Saturday, rising by 17 (nine previous cases were newly resolved).
The health unit announced a record 56 cases on Thursday, driven largely by the outbreaks at the jail and correctional centre.
Two TBDHU residents were in hospital with the virus Saturday, with one in Intensive Care Unit, a situation unchanged from the previous day.
