There are now 91 active cases in the District of Thunder Bay.

THUNDER BAY – The Thunder Bay District Health Unit says there are 29 new COVID-19 cases in its catchment area.

The health unit, which originally wasn’t planning on distributing a new case count on Christmas Eve, said they changed their mind with such a high number of cases, which should serve as a precaution for those considering holiday gatherings.

The new cases bring the district’s active total to 91, the highest it’s been since Dec. 12, when there were 114.

However, despite the high number of cases, there was only one new hospitalization of a district resident.

Ten of the cases involved contact with another case, while six involved travel outside of Northwestern Ontario. There have been 17 travel-related cases this week alone.

Eight cases previously announced are now considered to be resolved.

There have been 3,311 cases announced in 2021.

Daily case counts will not be provided again until Monday.
