THUNDER BAY – The Thunder Bay District Health Unit has announced four new COVID-19 cases, along with 13 cases considered to be connected to variants of concern.

The latest figures, unveiled on Monday, bring the region’s total number of cases to 3,241, with 52 considered active.

There have been 122 cases tied to variants of concern.

Of the new cases, two are considered to reside in Thunder Bay and surrounding areas and the other two live in First Nations communities, which have been particularly hard hit over the past week-and-a-half.

Since May 28 there have been 31 cases attributed to First Nations and just 10 in Thunder Bay and surrounding area.

Two of the new cases are considered to be close contact, while one is of unknown origin and the exposure category in the other is pending.

The district’s seven-day, per-100,000 case count is 36.02, the second time this week it’s hit that number. It hadn’t been that high previously since late April.
