THUNDER BAY – The Thunder Bay District Health Unit announced five new cases of COVID-19 Sunday, along with a new outbreak at a Thunder Bay assisted living facility.
Institutional outbreaks accounted for three of those, with two new cases at the Thunder Bay District Jail, and one at the Thunder Bay Correctional Centre.
The health unit has now announced 37 cases officially associated with the outbreak at the jail since Jan. 13, and 54 cases at the correctional centre since Jan. 19.
Two other cases announced Saturday were considered a result of close contact with a previously identified case.
Four of the cases involved individuals in the Thunder Bay area, while another was in an unspecified district community.
The number of active cases in the district fell slightly, to 158, thanks to seven newly resolved cases.
Two people remained in hospital with the virus Sunday, with one in the Intensive Care Unit.
The health unit separately announced a new outbreak at a Thunder Bay assisted living facility Saturday. Two individuals associated with the eight-bed Cumberland Place site, run by Brain Injury Services of Northern Ontario (BISNO), recently tested positive, the agency said.
It is not clear whether those two cases were included among those officially reported Sunday.
"BISNO has implemented the necessary precautions to limit spread and TBDHU will continue to monitor and assess the situation," the health unit said in a brief statement.
A staff member at McKellar Place, another assisted living site run by BISNO, tested positive earlier in January. That outbreak resolved without spreading any further.
