Health unit announces nine new COVID-19 cases

Active cases rise, with new cases tied to correctional centre and others with no known exposure

THUNDER BAY – The Thunder Bay District Health Unit announced nine new COVID-19 cases Sunday, with active cases ticking back upward slightly for the first time in over a week.

Two of the newest cases were tied to an outbreak at the Thunder Bay District Jail, where there have now been 106 total cases reported.

Another new case was associated with an outbreak at the Thunder Bay Correctional Centre, where 76 have been reported.

Four other new cases had no known exposure, while an exposure category for the remaining two cases was pending.

Eight of the cases were in the Thunder Bay area, while one was in an unspecified district community.

Active cases in the district rose by five, to 112, with four previous cases now declared resolved.

One person was newly hospitalized with the virus, the health unit reported, making for a total of three district individuals in hospital with COVID-19. Two of those people were in the Intensive Care Unit as of Sunday morning.

The district had recorded a cumulative total of 1,060 confirmed cases as of Sunday. Of those, 921 were considered resolved, 112 were active, while 27 deaths were attributed to the virus.
