THUNDER BAY – A surge in cases at the Thunder Bay District Jail has resulted in 32 new COVID-19 cases being reported in the district.
On Thursday, the Thunder Bay District Health Unit reported 21 new cases as part of the District Jail outbreak and two additional cases at the Thunder Bay Correctional Centre.
Of the remaining cases, one is classified as close contact, five are listed as no known exposure, and three are pending.
Four cases are from First Nation communities and the 28 remaining are in Thunder Bay and surrounding areas.
According to the health unit, eight additional cases are listed as resolved and the total number of active cases is now a record-high 170, with a cumulative total of 923.
One individual has been released from hospital, leaving one positive case in the ICU.
This is the largest single-day increase in cases at the Thunder Bay District Jail since the outbreak was declared on Jan. 9. There has been a total of 65 positive cases at the jail.
The Thunder Bay Correctional Centre has reported a total of 50 positive cases since the outbreak was declared.
