Health unit reports 106 new COVID-19 cases

THUNDER BAY – The Thunder Bay District Health Unit has reported 106 new COVID-19 cases, as the number of district residents in hospital with the virus rose slightly on Thursday.

There were 13 district residents in hospital with the virus Thursday, up two from the previous day. Two of those people were in the Intensive Care Unit.

The active case count rose by 12 to 365, with 93 previous cases declared resolved.

Of the 106 cases reported Thursday, 87 were in the Thunder Bay area, 12 in First Nations, and seven in other district communities.

Four of the cases were attributed to household contact, 32 to other close contact, and two to travel outside of Northwestern Ontario. Another 15 had no known exposure, while an exposure category for 53 others was still pending.

The testing positivity rate in the TBDHU had risen to 17.6 per cent for Jan. 2 to Jan. 8, the most recent period reported by the health unit.
