THUNDER BAY – An outbreak at the Thunder Bay District Jail continues to drive new COVID-19 infections in the district, accounting for 12 of 22 new cases announced Saturday.
Another eight cases were attributed to close contact with a previously identified case, one had no known exposure, and another was pending.
All 22 cases involved individuals in Thunder Bay and the surrounding areas.
With 33 cases declared resolved Saturday, the number of active cases in the district continued to fall for the eighth consecutive day, reaching 107. That’s the lowest level since Jan. 20, when it sat at 79.
The health unit reported no new COVID-related deaths or hospitalizations. However, one of two patients already in hospital with the virus is now in the Intensive Care Unit.
The district had reported a cumulative total of 1,051 cases since the pandemic began as of Saturday. Of those, 917 were considered resolved, 107 were active, and 27 had died.
At the Southbridge Roseview long-term care home, where a long-running outbreak has claimed the lives of 23 residents, no active cases were reported Saturday. Southbridge Care Homes states it continues to expect that outbreak to be officially declared over soon.
Another outbreak affecting the 6th Floor (Rose and Tulip Resident Home Area) af Hogarth Riverview Manor was declared over by the health unit Saturday. First announced on Jan. 28, it involved a single staff member who tested positive.
